Community Resources: families

PFLAG is a national support group for parents, families and friends of lesbians and gays. Free of charge, open to the public. Meets monthly on the last Tuesday evening at 7 PM in the rotunda of the College Center building on the campus of St.Charles Community College.

Since 1973 parents have joined together in different cities to support each other and their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) children or family members. We meet the third Saturday of the month at the Holy Communion Episcopal Church, located (two blocks east of Hanley Road) at 7401 Delmar Boulevard, University City, Missouri  63130.  We begin our meetings at 7:00 pm and usually end around 10:00 pm.

AIDS Project of the Ozarks (APO) is a non-profit community-based organization serving a 29 county region in southwest Missouri. APO currently serves over 600 clients with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG) is a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 500 affiliates in the United States. We meet on every third Sunday of the month at the National Avenue Church, 1515 National Avenue, Springfield, MO at 3:00 PM.

SASS unites survivors of suicide (family, friends, etc.) throughout the greater Kansas City metropolitan and surrounding areas. We believe the public must be educated about suicide.

At Pathways, we’re giving young adults who are homeless or living in out-of-home care the chance to develop the life skills they need to be successful. The Pathways Program operates scattered-site apartments in Kansas City and Wichita. It serves young men and women, as well as young parents with children.

NAMI-KC is the only organization which specifically supports the mentally ill and the family members of the mentally ill throughout the greater Kansas City area. NAMI-KC serves as an information center, including referrals on services needed. We provide educational seminars and reference materials related to mental illness.

At Synergy we envision a world without family violence, abuse or neglect. Synergy Services, Inc. began in 1970 as Synergy House, the only shelter for runaway and homeless youth in western Missouri. Today, Synergy provides a full continuum of care to assist individuals and families with immediate respite from violence, and services which empower clients to find and choose good options for future safety and success. In addition, we provide supportive services to families in crisis in an effort to prevent violence and focus on community education and social change in an effort to build a safer and more humane society.
